How to Delete and Close Your Yahoo Email Account Permanently

Deleting your Yahoo email account is an irreversible action that requires some preparation. Here is a step-by-step guide to permanently closing your Yahoo account.

Back Up Your Data

Before deleting your account, be sure to:

  • Download a copy of all emails and attachments you want to keep. You can use a client like Thunderbird or Outlook to export the data.
  • Export your contacts and save them to your computer or import them into another address book.
  • Download any photos or other files stored on Yahoo services like Flickr.

Once your account is closed, you will lose access to this data permanently.

Cancel Paid Subscriptions

  • Go to the Subscriptions page in your Yahoo account settings.
  • Cancel any active paid subscriptions like Yahoo Mail Plus. You cannot close an account with an outstanding balance.
  • Wait for confirmation that all subscriptions are cancelled before proceeding.

Inform Contacts

  • Let people know you are closing your Yahoo address so they can update their address books.
  • Set up an auto-reply with your new email address.

Enable Email Forwarding

  • Forward emails from your Yahoo account to a new email address for up to 30 days.
  • This will prevent loss of any stray messages sent to your old account.

Delete Your Yahoo Account

On a Web Browser:

  • Go to the Yahoo Account Deletion page.
  • Log into your account.
  • Read the account termination information carefully.
  • Click “Continue delete my account”.
  • Confirm your decision by entering your email address again.
  • Click “Yes, terminate this account”.

You will get a confirmation that your account is scheduled for deletion.

On Mobile:

  • Open the Yahoo Mail app on your device.
  • Go to “Settings” and tap “Account Info”.
  • Scroll down and select “Close account”.
  • Follow the prompts to confirm account closure.

After Account Deletion

  • Yahoo will deactivate your account for 30 days before permanent deletion. If you log in during this time, it will automatically reactivate.
  • Emails sent to your closed Yahoo address will start bouncing back to senders.
  • Remove your Yahoo account from any connected services and apps to prevent errors.

And that’s it! With your data backed up and account cancelled, you can safely close your Yahoo email account for good. Just be certain before taking this irreversible step.
