How To Power Off and Shut Down Your Chromecast Streaming Device

The Chromecast is a popular streaming device that allows you to stream content from your phone, tablet, or computer directly to your TV. However, unlike many other streaming devices, the Chromecast does not have a simple on/off switch. Here is a guide on the proper way to power off and shut down your Chromecast device.

Why There’s No On/Off Switch

The Chromecast is designed to always be on and ready to receive casts from your other devices. An always-on state allows the Chromecast to automatically update its software in the background without interfering with your usage. Having to manually turn it on every time you want to cast content would be inconvenient.

So by design, the Chromecast does not have a power button and is meant to stay plugged in.

When You Should Power It Off

While the Chromecast is made to stay on, there are some instances where you may want to power it off:

  • When physically moving it to another TV
  • When traveling or packing it for storage
  • For troubleshooting connectivity or setup issues
  • To give it a reboot if apps are freezing or glitching

Powering it off completely shuts down the device so you can safely unplug it.

3 Ways to Power Off Chromecast

Here are the main methods to power off your Chromecast streaming stick:

1. Unplug From Power Source

The simplest way to turn off a Chromecast is to physically disconnect it from power:

  • Unplug the USB power cable from the wall adapter or TV USB port.
  • If using the wall plug, you can also unplug the wall adapter itself.

This cuts power to the device completely.

2. Turn Off USB Port Power

If your Chromecast is plugged into one of your TV’s USB ports for power, see if your TV has a setting to turn off the USB port. This will stop power from going to the Chromecast.

Steps to try this:

  1. Go to your TV settings menu
  2. Look for a “USB Power” or “USB Port Power” setting
  3. Turn this off

Note: Not all TVs have this setting.

3. Use a Smart Plug

You can use a smart plug to remotely control power to your Chromecast:

  1. Plug the Chromecast power cable into the smart plug
  2. When you want to power down Chromecast, use the smart plug’s app or voice controls to turn off the plug
  3. To turn back on, use the smart plug’s controls to resume power
