How to Record and Screen Capture Your iPhone Mobile Device Display

Capturing what’s on your iPhone’s screen is easy with the built-in screen recording feature. Here’s a step-by-step guide to recording your iPhone’s display.

Enable Screen Recording in Control Center

The first step is to add the Screen Recording button to Control Center:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap “Control Center”
  3. Under “More Controls”, tap the green plus icon next to “Screen Recording”

This adds the Screen Recording control to Control Center.

Start a Screen Recording

To start recording:

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen (iPhone X or later) or swiping up from the bottom (iPhone 8 or earlier)
  2. Tap the Screen Recording icon (it looks like a solid white circle inside an outer circle)
  3. A 3-second countdown will appear, then your screen will begin recording

Everything happening on your display is now being captured in a video. You’ll see a red timer at the top of the screen indicating the recording is active.

Stop a Screen Recording

To stop recording:

  1. Open Control Center again
  2. Tap the red Screen Recording icon
  3. Tap “Stop” on the popup

Your iPhone will process the video and save it to your Photos app automatically.

Access Your Screen Recordings

All of your screen recordings are saved to the “Screen Recordings” album in the Photos app. To find them:

  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Tap “Albums”
  3. Scroll down to “Media Types”
  4. Tap “Screen Recordings”

You’ll see thumbnails for all your recordings here. Tap one to view, share, or edit it.

Change Screen Recording Settings

You can customize aspects of the screen recording, like microphone audio, resolution, and quality:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap “Control Center”
  3. Tap “Screen Recording”
  4. Make changes to Microphone, Video Quality, etc.

Some common settings to adjust:

  • Microphone Audio: Toggle on/off recording audio through your iPhone’s mic
  • Video Quality: Higher quality = bigger file size. Balance quality and size.
  • Resolution: Record in standard or HD 1080p resolutions

Record Long Screen Videos

By default, screen recordings are limited to 5 minutes in length. To record longer videos:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap “Developer”
  3. Enable “Disable Automatic Termination”

Now you can record videos longer than 5 minutes. The limit depends on your iPhone’s storage capacity.

Record Internal Audio

To capture internal audio like music playback in your videos:

  1. Connect headphones or external speakers to your iPhone
  2. Start a screen recording
  3. Audio playing on your iPhone will be recorded

This workaround lets you record internal audio without an external mic picking it up.

Edit Screen Recordings

The built-in Photos app includes powerful editing tools for trimming, rotating, adding filters and text, and more.

To edit a screen recording:

  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Tap “Albums” and select your screen recording
  3. Tap “Edit” in the upper right corner
  4. Use the editing tools to alter your video

You can trim the start/end points, apply filters, add text overlays, adjust speed/duration, and more. Get creative with editing!

Alternative Screen Recorders

While the built-in tool works great, third-party apps provide additional features:

  • RecordIt: Facecam, touch input visualization, annotations
  • DU Recorder: Live streaming, advanced editing tools
  • Awesome Screen Recorder: Screen mirroring, animated text/emoji overlays

Explore alternative recorders for more customization ability.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you encounter issues recording your screen:

  • Restart your iPhone
  • Check for iOS updates
  • Disable Low Power Mode
  • Close all other apps
  • Disable some accessibility settings

Restarting and closing other apps often resolves temporary glitches.

Capturing your iPhone’s screen is easy with the built-in Control Center shortcut. Customize settings to your needs, record app demos, capture gameplay, save online videos, and more. Edit your videos in the Photos app, and share them with friends, family, and followers.

With a few taps, you’ll unlock powerful screen recording capabilities on your iPhone. Have fun capturing videos of your device’s display!
