Overview
Resetting your Roku device to factory settings or forgetting saved WiFi networks can help resolve issues if your Roku is having problems connecting to the internet or apps. Here are the main ways to reset a Roku device:
- Soft Reset: Restarts the Roku OS without losing data or settings
- Factory Reset via Settings Menu: Resets device to factory defaults, removing all data and settings
- Factory Reset via Hardware Button: Same as above, but for devices that are completely frozen
Resetting your Roku will require you to set up the device again from scratch, including reconnecting to your WiFi network.
Soft Reset Roku
A soft reset is similar to restarting your computer or phone – it reboots the Roku operating system without deleting any data or settings. To soft reset:
- Press the Home button on your Roku remote
- Go to Settings > System > Power > System Restart
- Select Restart and confirm
The Roku will restart, which often resolves minor software glitches or connectivity issues. Your data and settings remain intact.
Factory Reset Roku via Settings Menu
To fully reset your Roku device to factory default settings:
- Press Home on the Roku remote
- Go to Settings > System > Advanced System Settings > Factory Reset
- Select Factory Reset and enter the code shown on-screen
- Choose Start Factory Reset to confirm
The device will reboot and you will have to set it up again from scratch, including reconnecting to your WiFi network. This removes all data, settings, and account info from the device.
Factory Reset Roku via Hardware Button
If your Roku is completely frozen and unresponsive, you can force a factory reset by using the hardware reset button:
- Locate the reset button on the back/bottom of the Roku device
- Press and hold the reset button for approximately 20 seconds
- Wait for the device to automatically reboot
Like the settings menu reset, this will erase all data and settings, forcing you to set up the device again.
Forgetting Saved WiFi Networks
Roku devices automatically reconnect to previously used WiFi networks. To make your Roku forget saved WiFi connections:
- Go to Settings > System > Advanced System Settings
- Select Network Connection Reset
- Choose Reset Connection and confirm
After resetting network connections, your Roku device will no longer automatically connect to or remember those WiFi networks. You’ll have to manually enter the WiFi details again if you want to reconnect in the future.
