How to Add and Use a Soundboard for Audio Clips in Discord

Discord has recently introduced a new Soundboard feature that allows users to play short audio clips in voice channels. This can liven up conversations and make voice chats more fun. As a Discord user with over 5 years of experience, I will explain how to set up and use Soundboards in Discord servers.

What is a Soundboard?

A Soundboard is essentially a panel within Discord that contains short audio clips that can be played in voice channels. These clips act like emojis, allowing you to react or respond to conversations with sounds rather than text.

Some example sounds you may find in a Discord Soundboard include:

  • Sound effects (drum rolls, rimshots, crickets chirping)
  • Voice lines from movies, TV shows, or video games
  • Funny meme sounds (the Annoying Orange, Roblox death sound)
  • Music clips or song snippets

How to Enable Soundboard on a Discord Server

To start using Soundboards, you first need to enable the feature in your Discord server settings:

  1. Open the Discord app and select your server
  2. Go to Server Settings > Soundboard
  3. Toggle Enable Soundboard to “On”

This will create a Soundboard panel that server members can access to play audio clips in voice channels.

Note: The Soundboard feature is currently in beta testing and is only available to some Discord servers at this time.

Adding Sounds to Your Server’s Soundboard

Once enabled, you can start adding sounds for your members to use:

  1. Open the Soundboard panel
  2. Click the Add Sound button (+)
  3. Select an audio file from your computer
  4. Give the sound a name and click Upload

Your sound will now appear in the Soundboard panel for users to play!

Tip: For the best sound quality, use short audio files that are under 10MB in size.

Using Soundboard Commands

In addition to clicking sounds in the panel, you can also use slash commands to trigger sounds from your keyboard:

  • /soundboard play [sound name] – Plays the specified sound
  • /soundboard stop – Stops any currently playing sound
  • /soundboard list – Lists all available sounds

This allows you to quickly play sounds without needing to click around in Discord.

Soundboard Permissions

As a server admin, you can control who has access to Soundboard features:

  • Manage Expressions – Allows uploading/deleting sounds
  • Use Expressions – Allows playing sounds

Disable these permissions for any roles/members you want to restrict.

Tips for Using Soundboards

Here are some tips to help you make the most of Discord Soundboards:

  • Use relevant sounds – Upload clips that relate to your server’s topics or that members will find funny. Inside jokes work great!
  • Limit sound spam – Playing a lot of sounds repeatedly can be annoying. Set rules to prevent spam.
  • Add variety – Upload a mix of sound effects, memes, and short music clips to keep things interesting.
  • Credit audio sources – If using clips from copyrighted sources, give credit to avoid issues.

Wrapping Up

The new Soundboard feature makes it easy to add extra audio flair to your Discord conversations. Enable it on your server, upload custom sounds, and start enhancing those voice chats!

With the ability to trigger sounds with slash commands or by clicking in the panel, it’s simple to liven up any discussion. Use Soundboard sounds to joke around with friends or set the mood during gaming sessions.
