How to Alter and Modify Text Color in Pixlr Online Photo Editor

As an experienced graphic designer and photographer, I often use online editing tools like Pixlr for quick image edits and text overlays. Pixlr provides a full suite of photo editing features comparable to desktop apps, with the convenience of an online editor that works in any web browser.

One of the handiest Pixlr features is the text tool, which allows you to add custom text overlays to your images. With Pixlr’s text options, you can easily change the font, size, and color of your text to match your design. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to alter and modify text color in Pixlr.

Accessing the Text Tool in Pixlr

To start adding text, open the image you want to edit in Pixlr Editor. Then:

  • Click on the Text icon (T) in the left toolbar
  • Choose either the Horizontal or Vertical Text Type
  • Click on your image where you want to add text
  • A text box will appear where you can type your text

Changing Text Color

Once your text box is added, you can alter the text color in two ways:

1. Text Color Palette

  • With your text box selected, click on the Text Color palette icon directly above the text
  • This will open a panel with predefined color swatches
  • Click on any color in the palette to change your text color

2. Color Picker

For more advanced color options:

  • In the text toolbar, click the downward arrow next to the Text Color palette icon
  • Select “Color Picker”
  • This opens a full RGB color spectrum panel
  • Use your mouse to pick any custom color from the spectrum
  • You can also enter specific RGB or Hex color values

Adding Effects and Gradients

Pixlr allows you to do more than just change text to a solid color. You can also add color effects and gradients:

Text Gradients

  • Select your text box
  • Open the Text Color palette
  • Choose the Gradient icon (diagonal lines)
  • Click and drag the gradient slider to adjust colors

Color Overlays

Adds a semi-transparent effect over text:

  • In the Layers panel, click the Add New Layer icon
  • Change layer Blending Mode to Color (near top of Layers panel)
  • Double click on the layer thumbnail to open Color Picker
  • Pick an overlay color with opacity less than 100%

Saving and Exporting Text

When you finish editing your text, be sure to export and save your final image:

  • File > Export to download edited image
  • Sign up for a free Pixlr account to save images in the cloud
