The lock screen is the first thing you see when you pick up your Xiaomi phone running MIUI firmware. While MIUI offers extensive customization options for the home screen, the lock screen customization is more limited out of the box. However, with some tweaks, you can personalize the lock screen to suit your style.
Table of Contents
Change Wallpaper and Install Super Wallpapers
The easiest way to customize the lock screen is to change the wallpaper. To do this:
- Go to Settings > Wallpaper
- Select lock screen wallpaper. You can choose a static image, video or one of Xiaomi’s Super Wallpapers. Super Wallpapers are interactive, animated backgrounds synchronized with real-world data.
Activate Always On Display
Always On Display keeps basic info like clock, date and notifications visible when your phone is locked. To enable:
- Go to Settings > Always On Display & Lock Screen
- Toggle on Always On Display
- Customize the content like clock style and notifications to show
Always On Display does drain battery faster but only by a small margin.
Customize Lock Screen Clock
You can change the lock screen clock format and style:
- Go to Settings > Lock Screen
- Tap Lock Screen Clock Format
- Select digital or analog clock styles
- Toggle Dual Clock on or off as needed
Add Lock Screen Shortcuts
There are two shortcuts on the lock screen by default but you can add one more:
- Go to Settings > Lock Screen Shortcuts
- Tap the plus icon
- Select an app shortcut to add
You can also replace the existing shortcuts if needed.
Install Lock Screen Themes
The Themes app lets you customize the look of MIUI’s system apps and UI elements. Many themes also include custom lock screens.
To apply a lock screen theme:
- Open the Themes app
- Browse or search for themes with lock screen options
- Tap a theme and check the lock screen preview
- Tap Apply to confirm
Themes need to be applied separately for the home screen, lock screen and system.
Use Third-Party Apps (Requires Root)
To add widgets, music players and more customization to the lock screen requires root access. With root, apps like CustomLockScreenUI and GravityBox can override MIUI’s lock screen with extensive options.
Proceed with caution as this modifies system-level elements. Thoroughly research before attempting as it can brick your device if done incorrectly.
Disable Lock Screen Carousel
The swipe left shortcut on the lock screen opens Xiaomi’s Wallpaper Carousel. This is used to display ads in some regions.
To remove Wallpaper Carousel:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Manage Apps
- Search for Wallpaper Carousel
- Tap Uninstall
This disables the swipe shortcut on the lock screen.
Conclusion
While not as flexible as the home screen, MIUI does offer some useful ways to tailor the lock screen to your preferences. Change the wallpaper, clock style and shortcuts to give it some personal flair. Themes open up more customization options as well. With root access, even more tweaks are possible but require advanced technical skills.
I hope these tips help you customize MIUI’s lock screen to better match your style. Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions!
