In the survival game DayZ, injuries are a common occurrence that can quickly become deadly if not properly treated. One of the most debilitating injuries is a broken leg, which severely limits mobility and prevents sprinting or jumping. A vital item for treating broken bones is the splint.

What is a Splint?
A splint is a medical device used to support and immobilize a fractured or otherwise injured limb. In DayZ, a splint helps hold the broken bone in place, allowing for relatively painless movement, though the leg itself will still take time to fully heal. Applying a splint prevents the injured player from taking continual shock damage from movement.
Why Splints are Important in DayZ
Without a splint, a broken leg will continuously drain your shock level every time you try to move, eventually causing you to fall unconscious. Splints allow you to walk and jog without accruing additional shock damage, buying you the time needed for the fracture to heal.
Splints are vital for maintaining mobility and avoiding further harm while your bones mend. Having a splint can mean the difference between life and death following a bad fall or bullet wound.
How to Craft a Splint
Crafting a splint requires combining either bandages/rags or duct tape with two small sticks. There are two recipes:
- 4 Rags + 2 Small Sticks
- 1 Bandage + 2 Small Sticks
- 1 Duct Tape + 2 Small Sticks
To craft the splint:
- Place the ingredients in your hands
- Hold the combine/craft button (default Left Mouse Button on PC) for 5+ seconds
- Take the resulting splint from the vicinity inventory tab
Note: The bandage must be pristine and not used prior. Rags should also be cleaned or disinfected first.
How to Apply a Splint to a Broken Leg
Once crafted, equip the splint in your hands. An indicator will appear showing which leg is injured. Hold down the “Fix Fracture” button prompt for ~10 seconds as your character sets the splint.
After application:
- Movement speed will be reduced but you can jog without shock damage
- Sprinting/jumping will remain disabled
- Healing time is reduced from 1 hour to 30 minutes
Monitor your legs’ status via the medical indicators. When the fracture heals, the splint will return to your inventory for reuse.
Where to Find Materials
Small Sticks – Harvest from bushes and small trees using a sharp tool like a knife. Avoid taking bleed damage by wearing gloves.
Rags – Cut up clothing items into rags using a bladed weapon. Check clothing spawns in towns.
Bandages – Loot medical buildings like hospitals, medical centers, and pharmacies. Also check medical loot spawns.
Duct Tape – Search industrial areas and garages. Duct tape rolls spawn as loot.
Tips for Treating Fractures
- Immediately seek safety before attempting to splint
- Crawl to reduce further injury and shock damage
- Splint as soon as possible to minimize healing time
- Keep splint ingredients handy in your inventory
- Use sticks to craft an improvised splint if ingredients aren’t available
- Stay hydrated and well fed to further aid bone healing
Having a splint ready can make all the difference when accidents happen. Learning where to find materials and how to properly craft and apply a splint is an essential DayZ survival skill. With some preparation and care, you can treat injuries in the field and get back out there.
