Snapchat allows you to easily share photos and videos with friends and followers. However, you may sometimes want to limit who can view your Snapchat Story. Here’s how to hide your Snapchat Story from some friends while keeping it visible to others.
Table of Contents
Hide Your Snapchat Story from Specific Friends
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon in the top-left corner
- Tap the settings icon (gear) in the top-right corner
- Scroll down and tap “View My Story” under “Privacy Controls”
- Tap “Custom”
- Select the friends you want to hide your story from by tapping their names
- Tap “Block” at the bottom once you’ve selected all friends to block
These friends will no longer be able to view your Snapchat Story. They will still be able to view any snaps you send directly to them.
Create a Private Snapchat Story
You can also create private Snapchat Stories visible only to selected friends:
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon
- Tap the “+” icon next to “My Stories”
- Tap “New Private Story”
- Name your private story
- Select friends to include
- Tap “Create Story”
Only friends you select will be able to view this private Snapchat Story.
Adjust Settings for Individual Snaps
When posting individual snaps (not to your Story), you can select exactly which friends can view each snap before sending:
- Take a snap and tap the arrow to go to the send screen
- Tap the names of friends you want to send it to
- Tap the arrow in the bottom right to send
This allows precise control over who sees each snap.
Block Someone From Viewing Your Story Then Unblock
If you block someone from your story, post a snap, then unblock them, they will NOT be able to see the snap you posted while they were blocked. The snap needs to still be available on your Story when they are unblocked in order for them to view it.
What Friends Can’t See When Blocked
When you block a friend from viewing your Story, here is what they can’t see:
- Your Story snaps
- Any private Stories you are included in
- Your location on Snap Map
They will still be able to:
- View any snaps you send directly to them
- Chat with you
- See your name on their friend list
When Blocking Makes Sense
Here are some examples of when you may want to block friends from viewing parts of your Snapchat presence:
- You only want to share certain Stories with close friends
- You don’t want work colleagues seeing certain Snaps
- You have an ex or someone else you want to avoid on Snapchat
The block function allows you to limit their access while still remaining connected.
Unblocking Friends
To unblock friends from seeing your Story:
- Go to your profile and tap the Settings gear
- Tap “View My Story”
- Tap “Custom”
- Remove the checkmark next to any previously blocked friends
- Tap “Done”
Newly posted snaps will now be visible to those friends again.
Other Ways to Control Snapchat Privacy
In addition to controlling Story visibility, Snapchat has robust privacy options:
- Who Can Contact Me: Restrict who can send you snaps or chats
- Quick Add: Control whether your profile is visible in Quick Add to new friends
- Location Settings: Choose who sees your location on Snap Map
Adjust these based on your comfort level for who interacts with you on Snapchat.
Conclusion
Snapchat provides granular control over who views different parts of your content. Take advantage of options like custom Story visibility, private Stories, and individual snap recipients to share what you want while maintaining your privacy. Review the other privacy controls around contacting, finding, and locating you as well. Stay safe online by taking charge of your Snapchat privacy.
