How to Install and Use WhatsApp Chat App on an iPad Tablet

Introduction

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, with over 2 billion active users. It allows you to easily chat with friends and family, share photos and videos, make voice and video calls, and more.

While WhatsApp has native apps for iPhone and Android phones, there is currently no official WhatsApp app available for the iPad. However, there are a few workarounds that allow you to access WhatsApp on an iPad.

Set Up WhatsApp Web

The easiest way to use WhatsApp on an iPad is through WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp Web allows you to access your WhatsApp account through any web browser.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open Safari on your iPad and go to web.whatsapp.com.
  2. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device.
  3. Point your iPhone’s camera at the QR code on the WhatsApp Web page on your iPad. This will link your WhatsApp account between the devices.

Once linked, you can use WhatsApp Web on your iPad to chat just like you would on your phone.

Add a Home Screen Shortcut

To make it easier to access WhatsApp Web, add it to your iPad’s home screen:

  1. While on web.whatsapp.com in Safari, tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing up)
  2. Tap Add to Home Screen
  3. Give it a name like “WhatsApp” and tap Add

Now you’ll have a WhatsApp icon on your home screen that opens directly to WhatsApp Web.

Use the WhatsApp Beta App

WhatsApp is testing a native iPad app, but it is currently only available through the TestFlight beta program.

If you get access to the TestFlight beta, you can install a full WhatsApp app on your iPad. To get access:

  1. Join the WhatsApp TestFlight beta waitlist here. You may need to wait for a spot to open up.
  2. Once accepted, download TestFlight on your iPad and install the WhatsApp beta from there.
  3. The app will guide you through account setup and activation, similar to on an iPhone.

Keep in mind the beta app may have bugs as it’s still in development.

Use Third-Party Apps

There are a few third-party apps on the App Store, like Chat+ WA for iPad, that provide WhatsApp access on an iPad.

These apps connect to your phone to sync your WhatsApp messages and let you chat from your iPad screen. They don’t require a separate WhatsApp account.

Most of these third-party services have free and paid tiers with different features. Look for apps with high ratings and recent updates for the best experience.

Tips for Using WhatsApp on an iPad

  • Since WhatsApp Web and third-party apps rely on connecting to your phone, keep your phone turned on and connected to the internet for the best syncing experience.
  • Enable notifications in Safari (for WhatsApp Web) or in the app’s settings so you don’t miss messages.
  • For easier typing, use a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad, especially for long messages.
  • To save media like photos from WhatsApp, touch and hold them and choose Save Image or Save Video.
  • Use Split View on your iPad to multitask with WhatsApp open alongside other apps.

While we await an official iPad app from WhatsApp, these workarounds allow you to stay in touch on your tablet without having to use your phone. The experience may not be as seamless as a native app, but it gets the job done.
