- Open the Discord server and locate the text channel you want to join. Text channels are designated with a “#” symbol (e.g. #general).
- Simply click on the text channel to open it and start chatting. You can type messages and send to others in that channel.
To Join a Voice Channel
- Locate the voice channel you want to join. Voice channels have a small speaker icon next to them.
- Click on the voice channel to join it. Your username will now appear below the channel name to indicate you have joined.
- Make sure your microphone is configured properly in Discord’s settings. You may need to select the correct input device.
- If the connection status in the bottom left shows “Connected” in green, then you are ready to start talking to others in the voice channel.
Linking Text and Voice Channels
- Discord has a feature called “Text Chat in Voice” that allows server admins to enable text channels linked specifically to each voice channel. This lets people share messages without leaving voice chat.
- To enable this, server admins can create a new text channel with the same name as the linked voice channel, like #voice-chat-1. Members in that voice channel can now send messages in the linked text channel.
- The text and voice channels stay linked even if members leave and rejoin the voice channel. This keeps the conversation history intact.
