How to Locate, Tame and Ride Horses in Minecraft Game

Locating Horses

Horses naturally spawn in Plains and Savanna biomes in herds of 2-6. They can be found wandering these biomes or in generated structures like villages.

Tips for finding horses:

  • Search Plains and Savanna biomes, especially near villages
  • Use a horse spawn egg to spawn horses if you can’t find any
  • Use the /locatebiome command to find Plains and Savanna biomes

Taming Horses

To tame a horse, you need to repeatedly mount it until hearts appear, indicating it is tamed. Here are the steps:

  1. Make sure you don’t have an item selected in your hotbar
  2. Mount the horse by right-clicking on it
  3. You will likely get bucked off, quickly remount
  4. Keep mounting until hearts appear – this indicates the horse is tamed

Tips for taming:

  • Feeding a horse apples, golden carrots, etc. while mounting can speed up the taming process
  • Using a lead on an untamed horse can make it easier to mount repeatedly
  • Tamed horses can be healed by feeding them food like wheat and hay bales

Riding Tamed Horses

To ride a tamed horse, you first need to equip it with a saddle, which allows you to control its movement.

Acquiring a Saddle

Saddles can be:

  • Found in dungeon and Nether fortress chests
  • Fished from fishing rods
  • Traded with villagers
  • Crafted using 4 string and 2 iron ingots (Education Edition only)

Equipping the Saddle

Once you have a saddle:

  1. Open the horse’s inventory screen
  2. Place the saddle in the saddle slot
  3. Mount the horse to be able to control it

Tips for riding horses:

  • Crouch while mounted to slowly descend blocks and not take fall damage
  • Horses are not affected by jump boost or speed potion effects
  • Equip horse armor for protection – leather, iron, gold, diamond horse armor can all be found

Controlling Horses

Use these controls once mounted on a saddled horse:

  • WASD: Moves the horse forward, left, back, and right
  • Spacebar: Makes the horse jump
  • Shift: Dismounts the horse
  • E: Opens the horse’s inventory

Additional tips:

  • Hold jump to charge a bigger jump
  • Tap jump repeatedly while moving to glide over blocks
  • Crouching prevents fall damage but slows descent

Breeding Horses

To breed horses:

  1. Feed 2 tamed horses golden apples or golden carrots to activate love mode
  2. Love hearts will appear around the horses
  3. A baby horse with traits from its parents spawns

The baby horse can grow to an adult by feeding it or through time. You can then breed it with other horses!

This covers the basics of locating, taming and riding horses in Minecraft. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to find, control and even breed horses on your survival world. Let me know if you have any other questions!
