How to Play Fortnite on Your Chromebook

Fortnite is one of the most popular video games in the world. With its free-to-play Battle Royale mode, engaging gameplay, and frequent updates, it’s easy to see why Fortnite has become such a phenomenon.

While Fortnite is available on most platforms like PCs, gaming consoles, and mobile devices, Chromebooks have traditionally not been able to run the game. However, thanks to recent developments like cloud gaming services and Android app support on Chrome OS, playing Fortnite on a Chromebook is now possible.

Using Cloud Gaming Services

The easiest way to play Fortnite on a Chromebook is through cloud gaming services like Nvidia GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Amazon Luna. These services allow you to stream Fortnite over the internet to your device.

Nvidia GeForce Now

GeForce Now is Nvidia’s cloud gaming service. To use it:

  1. Go to https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/ on your Chromebook
  2. Create an Nvidia account or sign in
  3. Install the GeForce Now Chrome extension
  4. Launch the app and search for Fortnite
  5. Click “Play” and Fortnite will start streaming to your Chromebook

The benefit of GeForce Now is that you get the full PC version of Fortnite, with access to keyboard/mouse controls and graphical settings. However, you’ll need a strong internet connection for smooth performance.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming works similarly – just head to xbox.com/play on your Chromebook. An Xbox account is required, and there is a limited free tier or paid subscriptions. Fortnite supports touch controls through this service.

Amazon Luna

Amazon’s cloud gaming platform also lets you play Fortnite. Go to amazon.com/luna to sign up and connect a compatible controller. Like Xbox Cloud Gaming, a subscription is needed after an introductory period.

Sideloading the Android Version

Fortnite has an Android version that you can try sideloading onto your Chromebook.

Sideloading means manually installing an app instead of downloading it from the Play Store. This involves enabling a developer mode to allow app installs from unknown sources.

Here are the steps:

  1. Turn on developer mode and enable Android app support on your Chromebook
  2. Download the Fortnite Android APK from epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/mobile/android/get-started
  3. Open the APK file to trigger the installation
  4. Fortnite should now be installed and ready to play!

Note: Sideloading Fortnite may not work properly on all Chromebooks. Your device needs an ARM processor with at least 4GB of RAM and Chrome OS 64-bit. Performance and compatibility issues can occur.

Using Remote Desktop

If the above options don’t work or provide a subpar experience on your Chromebook, you can use remote desktop software to stream Fortnite from another computer.

Options like Chrome Remote Desktop allow you to access a Windows PC or Mac remotely from your Chromebook. Simply install and run Fortnite on the host computer, then stream the video, audio, and controls to your Chromebook.

The steps would be:

  1. Install remote desktop software like Chrome Remote Desktop on both computers
  2. Set up a remote connection and share your credentials between devices
  3. Launch Fortnite on the host computer
  4. Connect from your Chromebook and enter the access PIN if prompted
  5. Play Fortnite remotely while the game runs on the other computer

The benefit here is that you get the full desktop version of Fortnite. But there may be some visual compression or input lag during streaming.

Tips for Optimal Performance

Here are some tips to ensure the smoothest Fortnite experience on your Chromebook:

  • Close other apps and browser tabs to dedicate more system resources
  • Use a wired internet connection instead of WiFi whenever possible
  • Disable background apps and turn off antivirus if playing via remote desktop
  • Lower graphical settings or resolution if streaming Fortnite from the cloud or remotely
  • Update your Chromebook software and check for optimal battery/power settings for gaming
  • Consider upgrading to a newer Chromebook with faster processor and more RAM

While a Chromebook isn’t the ideal gaming machine for Fortnite, getting the game running is definitely possible with the right method and setup based on your device capabilities and internet connectivity. With some performance compromises, an enjoyable mobile Fortnite experience can be achieved on a Chromebook.
