Discord is a popular communication platform used by millions of people for gaming, community building, and hanging out with friends. However, like any large online platform, Discord also has issues with inappropriate content and behavior. As a user, it’s important to know how to identify and properly report servers that violate Discord’s terms of service or community guidelines.

Identifying Inappropriate Servers
There are a few common signs that a Discord server may be inappropriate or in violation of Discord’s rules:
- Hate speech, harassment, or threats – Any messages that attack or threaten others based on protected characteristics like race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation. This includes slurs, violent rhetoric, doxxing, revenge porn, etc.
- Sexual content involving minors – Any sexual or suggestive content involving or targeting minors, including animated content. This is strictly prohibited.
- Illegal activities – Discussions about or coordination of illegal activities like hacking, fraud, drug sales, etc.
- Spam/scams – Suspicious links, fake giveaways, phishing attempts, spam bots, etc.
- Ban evasion – Servers created to evade a previous ban for rule violations.
If you come across a server exhibiting any of these behaviors, it should be reported to Discord right away.
Reporting Inappropriate Servers
To properly report a Discord server that violates community guidelines, follow these steps:
On Desktop
- Right click the concerning server in your server list and select “Copy ID”. This copies the unique server ID to your clipboard.
- Go to Discord’s Support Page and select “Report” > “Report a Server”.
- Fill out the form with your email, a description of the violation, and paste the server ID you copied.
- Click submit. Discord’s Trust & Safety team will investigate the server based on your report.
On Mobile
- Tap and hold the concerning server icon to bring up the server options.
- Tap “Copy ID” to save the server ID to your clipboard.
- Go to Discord’s Support Page in your mobile browser.
- Fill out the “Report a Server” form with your email, violation details, and paste the server ID.
- Tap submit and Discord will investigate.
After submitting a server report, Discord’s Trust & Safety team will look into the server and take action if violations of the guidelines are found. This could include removing inappropriate channels, banning violating users, or fully shutting down the reported server if misconduct is rampant.
What Happens After Reporting
- Discord aims to respond to reports within 1-3 business days. More serious violations like illegal content may be prioritized.
- You’ll receive an email when Discord has come to a resolution on the reported server. For privacy reasons, they don’t share specific moderation actions taken.
- If no violation is found or action taken after a full investigation, you’ll receive notice that no further action is warranted.
- Repeated false or frivolous reports can result in a suspension of your own account. So only report legitimate violations.
Reporting inappropriate Discord servers helps keep the wider community safe and enjoyable for everyone. Servers that repeatedly or severely violate Discord’s guidelines may be banned from the platform altogether. So don’t hesitate to report any misconduct you encounter – you’re helping protect your fellow users.
Preventing Inappropriate Servers
Server admins can also take proactive measures to prevent their communities from becoming unsafe or toxic places that require reporting:
Set Clear Rules
- Establish clear community guidelines and rules around speech, content, conduct, etc.
Moderate Activity
- Appoint trustworthy moderators and give them tools to enforce rules.
- Ban users who violate rules after fair warning.
Enable Safety Tools
- Use moderation roles, permission overrides, banned words, etc.
- Enable enhanced server verification for more safety against spammers/raiders.
Creating a warm, welcoming server with active moderation helps reduce the likelihood of needing to report your own community. But when other servers cross the line, reporting them is quick and easy on both desktop and mobile.
