Sharing Playlists with Friends
The easiest way to share a Spotify playlist is by simply copying the playlist link and sending it to whoever you want to share it with. Here’s how:
On Desktop
- Open the playlist you want to share
- Click on the three dots next to the playlist name
- Select Share from the dropdown menu
- Choose Copy Playlist Link
- Paste the link in a message to share with friends
On Mobile
- Open the playlist you want to share
- Tap on the three dots next to the playlist name
- Choose Share from the menu
- Select Copy Link to copy the playlist URL
- Paste the link in a text or social media post to share
You can also share playlists directly to social media from the Spotify mobile app. Simply choose the social platform you want to share to after tapping “Share” and Spotify will create a post with a link to the playlist.
Making Playlists Public or Private
By default, all new Spotify playlists you create are public. That means anyone on Spotify can find and listen to playlists you’ve made. But what if you have some private playlists you only want to share with certain people?
Here’s how to make Spotify playlists public or private:
On Mobile
- Open the playlist
- Tap the three dots next to the name
- Choose Make Private to make it private or Make Public to make it public
On Desktop
- Right-click on the playlist
- Select Make Private or Make Public
Private playlists cannot be viewed publicly on your Spotify profile and the only way someone can access it is if you directly share the playlist link with them.
Publishing Playlists to Your Spotify Profile
In addition to making playlists public or private, you can also control whether or not they are published to your Spotify profile for public viewing. Any playlists published to your profile will be visible to anyone who visits your profile.
Here’s how to manage playlist publishing:
On Desktop
- Click on your profile name in the top-right
- Go to Settings > Social
- Toggle Publish my new playlists on my profile on or off
This setting will automatically publish any new playlists to your profile. You can go back later and individually remove playlists from your profile if you want.
On Mobile
There is currently no way to control playlist publishing from the mobile app. You have to use the desktop method above.
Sharing Playlists via Messaging
You can also use Spotify’s built-in messaging feature to share playlists or currently playing music with friends.
Here’s how to access messaging:
On Mobile
- Tap Home on the bottom nav bar
- Tap the speech bubble icon next to Friend Activity
- Choose friends or groups to message
On Desktop
- Click Home on the left sidebar
- Click Messages icon next to Friend Activity
- Select the friends you want to message
Once in a message thread, you can easily share songs, albums, artists, or playlists. The recipient will see a playable card they can instantly play without leaving the conversation.
Making Collaborative Playlists
If you want to make a shared playlist that multiple people can contribute to, you can make Spotify playlists collaborative.
Here’s how:
- Open the playlist you want to make collaborative
- Tap Make Collaborative on mobile or Collaborative Playlist on desktop
- Search and add friends you want to invite to add songs
Anyone added to a collaborative playlist can add or remove songs. You can see which songs each person added.
