Among Us is a popular online multiplayer game where players are divided into “crewmates” and “impostors”. As an impostor, your goal is to sabotage and eliminate the crewmates without getting caught. Mastering deception skills is essential to succeed as an impostor. Here are some tips to level up your impostor gameplay:

Understand the Impostor’s Abilities
As an impostor, you have special abilities that crewmates do not have:
- Kill – Your main ability is killing crewmates when you are alone with them. Time this carefully to avoid getting caught.
- Vent – You can use vents to travel between rooms unseen. Use this to make stealthy kills or fake tasks.
- Sabotage – Sabotaging ship systems like lights, oxygen, reactors creates chaos you can exploit.
Knowing how to leverage these abilities is key to effective deception.
Blend In Through Faking Tasks
A dead giveaway that you are an impostor is not completing tasks. Crewmates will expect you to be productive like them.
- Go through task motions at stations even if you have no tasks.
- Leave before animation plays on visual tasks.
- Check your fake task list if asked what’s left.
- Watch task bar progress when with others.
Fool crewmates into thinking you are one of them busy with tasks.
Manipulate Vision and Movement
Controlling what others see and where they can go allows you to make stealthier kills.
- Sabotage lights – Killing in the dark covers your tracks.
- Lock doors – Trap crewmates for an easy target.
- Sabotage O2 – Herd crewmates while hunting stragglers.
- Use vents for unseen movement – Enter and exit kill scenes unseen.
Establish Trust Through Deception
Gaining crewmates’ trust lowers their suspicions, allowing more room to kill freely.
- Travel in groups early on to seem part of the team.
- Engage in discussions to appear invested in the group.
- Defend innocent crewmates to build rapport.
- Share fake tasks to coordinate alibis.
Leverage that trust later when it’s time to deceive and strike.
Choose Your Kills Wisely
Not all kills are created equal. Choosing your victims carefully is paramount.
- Kill loners first – Isolated crewmates cannot confirm your location
- Kill witnesses last – Crewmates who saw you look innocent make dangerous late-game threats
- Kill the suspicious – Take out crewmates asking lots of questions about you
Use Sabotages to Your Advantage
Sabotage is more than just creating chaos. Used right, it can enable kills.
- Sabotage reactor/O2 during a stack kill – No one can report the body with the crisis active
- Sabotage lights before killing – Crewmates have limited visibility in the darkness
- Close doors to trap crewmates – Separate crewmates from the pack for an easy target
Avoid Common Impostor Pitfalls
Some mistakes can instantly incriminate you. Be aware of these impostor slip-ups:
- Getting seen exiting a vent – Crewmates can glimpse your vent hops on the admin map
- Acting overly suspicious – Repeatedly following crewmates looks shady
- Misaligning with other impostors – Contradicting your teammate’s story outs you both
- Over defending yourself – Protesting too much just seems sus
Practice, Practice, Practice
Like any skill, excellent deception takes time and effort to hone.
- Stick to one map first – Master Skeld before taking on all the maps
- Play in different group sizes – Deception strategies differ in 4 vs 10 player games
- Try each role – Understanding both sides makes you a stronger impostor
- Learn from each game – Review what went right and wrong after each round
With dedicated practice across various games, you will unlock your inner impostor talent. Use these tips to guide your journey towards becoming a deception master!
