The PlayStation 5 home screen interface allows you to access your games, media apps, settings, and more. While the PS5 does not currently support custom themes like the PS4 did, there are still a few ways you can customize and personalize your home screen experience.
Table of Contents
Dynamic Backgrounds and Music
The PS5 home screen features dynamic backgrounds that automatically change based on the game or app you have highlighted. For example, highlight the God of War: Ragnarok tile and the background will change to artwork from that game.
In addition to the background image changing, some games will also trigger dynamic music to play instead of the default PS5 menu music. This helps further immerse you when browsing your game library.
Customize Your Profile
While you can’t change the overall theme, you can customize your PSN profile by setting a custom background image and avatar:
- Go to your profile
- Select Edit Profile
- Choose Change Image under Cover Image
- Select a screenshot you’ve taken as your background
- You can also update your avatar by selecting Change Image under Avatar
Customizing your profile allows you to personalize your experience when others view your profile.
Rearrange Your Control Center
The Control Center on PS5 provides quick access to common system functions and features. You can rearrange the icons shown here to better fit your usage preferences:
- Press the PS button to bring up the Control Center
- Select the options button on any icon
- Choose Rearrange Icons
- Select the icon you want to move and reposition it
Customizing your Control Center allows you to quickly access the features you use the most.
Enable 2-Step Verification
While not directly customization related, enabling 2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second step to sign in, like an authentication code sent your phone.
To set this up:
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security > 2-Step Verification
- Select Turn On Two-Step Verification and follow the prompts
Change Your Home Screen Sort Method
You can change how your game library is sorted on the home screen by choosing between default, alphabetical, most recently played, or play time:
- Go to your game library
- Press the options button
- Select Sort
- Choose your preferred sorting method
Disable Dynamic Music
If you find the dynamic music distracting when browsing games, you can turn this off:
- Go to Settings > Sound
- Select Audio Output
- Toggle Home Screen Music to Off
Disabling dynamic music will keep the standard PS5 menu music playing at all times.
Set Custom Button Assignments
For supported controllers, you can customize what the extra buttons do:
- Go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments
- Select a controller
- Choose a button and pick what system function it triggers
Customizing your controller buttons allows you to more easily trigger common actions.
Use Folders (On PS4 Games)
If you access your PS4 game library from your PS5, you can use folders to organize your games just like on the PS4. This allows some customization of your PS4 library.
Themes Could Come Later
Currently the PS5 does not allow themes, but this could change in a future system software update. The PS4 did not have themes initially either, so there is hope themes could come eventually to PS5 as well.
Conclusion
While full custom themes are not an option on PS5, there are still ways to personalize your experience through profile customization, control center rearrangement, button assignments, and more. And dynamic backgrounds help highlight your game library.
The PS5 may add themes down the road, but for now you can still tailor parts of the experience to your liking through the methods mentioned in this article.
