How to Make and Admin a Group Chat in Signal Messenger

Signal Messenger is a popular encrypted messaging app that allows users to communicate securely. One of its key features is the ability to create group chats. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make and admin a group chat in Signal Messenger:

Creating a New Group

  1. Open the Signal app on your phone
  2. Tap on the compose icon (pencil icon) in the top right corner
  3. Select “New Group”
  4. Select the contacts you want to add to the group or enter their phone numbers manually
  5. Give the group a name
  6. You can also add a group avatar by tapping on the camera icon
  7. Choose the disappearing message timer for the group (off, 5 seconds to 1 year)
  8. Tap “Create”

The new group chat will now appear in your chat list as well as the chat list of the members you added.

Adding New Members

To add new members to an existing Signal group:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name at the top
  3. Tap “Add Members”
  4. Select contacts to add or enter phone numbers
  5. Tap “Update” after selecting members

The new members will receive an invitation to join the group chat.

Making Other Users Admin

Signal groups allow having multiple admins who can manage group settings. To make another member an admin:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name
  3. Tap “View All Members”
  4. Tap on the member you want to make admin
  5. Toggle “Admin” to on

Admins can add/remove users from the group, change group info like name/avatar, and enable admin-only messaging.

Enabling Admin-Only Messaging

To restrict messaging to only admins in a Signal group:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name
  3. Tap “Permissions”
  4. Under “Send Messages”, choose “Only Admins”
  5. Tap “OK”

Now only admins will be able to send messages in the group chat.

Sending @mentions

Signal also allows directly mentioning other group members using @mentions:

  1. Type @ in the message composer
  2. Select the group member’s name from the list
  3. The member will receive a notification even if they have muted the chat

This helps in directing messages to specific people instead of the whole group.

Sharing Group Invite Links

To add members to a Signal group via an invite link:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name
  3. Tap “Share Group Link”
  4. Choose the permission settings for the link
  5. Share the link with anyone you want to join the group

Users can simply tap the invite link on their device to join the Signal group chat.

Exporting the Group Chat

If you ever need to save a record of all messages in a Signal group chat:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name
  3. Scroll down and tap “Export Chat”
  4. Choose whether to include media
  5. Share the exported chat via another app

The entire chat history including text messages, images, videos, and files will be exported as a ZIP file.

Leaving the Group

To remove yourself from a Signal group chat:

  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap on the group name
  3. Scroll down and tap “Leave Group”

You will no longer receive any messages from that Signal group.
