How to Play Mafia on Zoom: Virtual Party Game Fun

Mafia, also known as Werewolf or Assassin, is a popular party game that involves two teams – the townspeople/villagers and the mafia. The game takes place over alternating night and day phases.

Goal:

  • The mafia members aim to eliminate all the innocent townspeople before being discovered.
  • The townspeople aim to identify and eliminate all the mafia members.

Ideal number of players: 12-16 players. Can be played with as few as 7 players. For very large groups, add additional roles.

Roles:

  • Narrator/Moderator: Mediates the game.
  • Mafia members: Know who each other are and kill townspeople at night.
  • Townspeople/Villagers: Try to discover who the mafia members are.
  • Detective: Can investigate someone each night.
  • Doctor: Can protect someone from being killed each night.

Additional roles: Priest, Lycan, Peeping-Tom, Grandma with Shotgun etc.

How to Play on Zoom

  1. Appoint a moderator who knows the rules.
  2. Private message role assignments to each player.
  3. Use Breakout Rooms at night for the mafia to coordinate kills. Adjust Breakout Room sizes as player count reduces.
  4. Play day phases with everyone together, allowing discussion and accusations.
  5. Vote out suspected mafia members. Majority vote wins.
  6. Eliminated players can watch the remainder of the game.
  7. Game ends when either all mafia or townspeople have been eliminated.

Tips

  • Encourage players to defend themselves when accused.
  • Mafia should balance pushing their agenda vs staying hidden.
  • Kills should be strategic, targeting those most likely to uncover the mafia.
  • Mafia can claim to be the doctor/detective as they can lie.
  • Townspeople should establish their innocence early and contribute to discussions.
