How to Recall and Delete Accidentally Sent Emails in Gmail

Sending an email by mistake can be frustrating. Whether you sent it to the wrong person, had typos, or forgot an attachment, Gmail gives you a short window to undo sending the email before it reaches the recipient’s inbox.

Recall Accidentally Sent Emails

Gmail has an Undo Send feature that lets you recall an email for up to 30 seconds after clicking Send. To use it:

  • Enable Undo Send in Gmail Settings:
    • Click the Settings icon > See all settings
    • Go to the General tab
    • Find Undo Send and select a cancellation period (5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds)
    • Click Save Changes at the bottom
  • Send a test email
  • Look for the Undo link after clicking Send and click it within the cancellation period
  • The recalled email will open as a draft for editing

You can also unsend emails on the Gmail mobile app:

  • Tap Undo at the bottom right after sending
  • The email will be saved as a draft

Tip: Set the cancellation period to 30 seconds to give yourself more time to recall emails.

Permanently Deleting Emails

When you delete emails in Gmail, they go to the Trash folder. To permanently delete emails:

On the Web

  • Click Trash on the left sidebar
  • Select emails and click Delete forever
  • Empty the Trash folder completely by clicking Empty trash now

On Mobile

  • Tap the hamburger menu
  • Go to Trash
  • Tap the delete icon next to emails
  • Tap Empty trash now to fully clear it

Recovering Deleted Emails

If you accidentally deleted important emails, you may be able to recover them:

  • On the web, emails deleted in the last 30 days can be found in All Mail > Trash > Deleted
  • On Android, enable undo send in Gmail Settings to undelete for up to 30 seconds
  • Use the Restore feature on iOS to recover recently deleted emails

Delete All Gmail Emails

To delete all emails and clear your Gmail storage:

  • On the web, select all conversations in All Mail
  • Click Select all conversations at the top
  • Click the Delete icon
  • Empty the Trash folder

On mobile, you’ll need to delete emails manually or in bulk. Install apps like Sweeper to delete thousands of Gmail emails at once.

Prevent Sending Wrong Emails

To avoid sending emails to the wrong recipient:

  • Double check the To field before sending
  • Set up email aliases to separate personal and work contacts
  • Label important contacts
  • Pause before clicking Send on important emails
  • Enable 2-step verification for account security
