CapCut is a popular free video editing app that allows you to add various effects to your videos, including split screen effects. The split screen effect lets you show two videos side-by-side in the frame. This can be useful for reaction videos, comparison videos, and more.
However, once you’ve added a split screen effect, you may later decide you want to separate the videos into two clips again or remove the effect entirely. Here’s how to do that in CapCut:
Table of Contents
Separating the Split Screen Back into Two Clips
- Open the project containing the split screen effect in the CapCut app
- Tap on the clip in the timeline that has the split screen effect
- In the editor, tap on the split screen effect button (it looks like two rectangles side-by-side)
- This will open the split screen effect settings
- At the bottom, tap on the “Separate” button
- This will instantly turn the single split screen clip back into the original two separate video clips
- You can now edit or delete either of those clips individually
Removing the Split Screen Effect Entirely
If you want to completely remove the split screen effect rather than just separating it back into two clips, follow these steps:
- Open the CapCut project and tap the clip with the split screen effect to enter the editor
- Tap on the split screen effect button to open the effect settings
- At the bottom left, tap on the “Effect” dropdown menu
- Choose the option that says “None”
- The split screen effect will be instantly removed
- Only one of the original video clips will remain
- You can now edit the singular video clip as normal
Adjusting the Split Screen Effect (Without Removing It)
If you want to keep the split screen effect but modify how it looks, use these steps:
- Tap on the clip with the split screen effect to enter the editor
- Tap the split screen button to open the effect settings
- Use the slider at the top to adjust the position of the video clips within the frame
- Tap the crop icon to adjust the size and position of each video’s crop frame
- Use the “Swap” button to switch which video is on the left versus right side
- Tap “Change Video” to select completely different videos for the split screen
- Adjust the Transparency slider if you want one video to appear more faint
- Tap “Add Filter” to apply a filter to just one side of the split screen
- Tap “Sticker” to add stickers/emojis that display on just one side
Pro Tip: Double tap on one side of the split screen to make that side fill the entire viewer so you can better see that clip while editing the crop frame, filters, etc.
Adding Background Music to Just One Side
An advanced trick with split screen effects is adding background music that plays on just one side:
- Separate the split screen back into two clips
- Add the background music track to the timeline on the track under ONE of the split screen clips
- Select both that clip and music clip and “Merge” them
- Now reapply the split screen effect by selecting both clips and tapping split screen
- The music will only be audible on one side!
Fixing Sync Issues in Split Screen Clips
If you notice the two videos in the split screen getting out of sync:
- Separate the split screen effect first
- Trim one or both of the clips slightly to re-align the timing
- Then reapply the split screen effect
- Use the position slider to line up the action again
Adding Transition Effects Between Split Screens
To smoothly transition between having a split screen effect and not having one:
- Separate the split screen into two clips
- Add a transition effect like “Smooth Zoom” in between them
- Adjust the transition duration as needed
- Then select everything, right click, and “Merge”
- Now re-add the split screen effect
The transition will play each time before the split occurs. Get creative with different transition effects!
Other Split Screen Tips
- Use split screens for “before and after” comparisons, like showing a messy room transitioning into the cleaned version
- Show off two outfit choices using a split screen and ask friends to vote on their favorite
- Use split screen to instantly teleport between two different locations
- Show a tutorial on one side and someone mimicking it in real time on the other
- Create a split screen lyric video with the lyrics on one side and you singing them on the other
