How to Add and Read MOBI eBook Files on an Amazon Kindle Device

As an avid reader and Kindle user for over 5 years, I have extensive experience using Kindles and managing ebook files. In this comprehensive guide, I will walk you through the process of adding MOBI files to your Kindle and reading them.

An Overview of MOBI Files

MOBI files are one of the most popular ebook formats optimized for Kindle devices. Here are some key things to know about MOBI files:

  • Compatibility – MOBI files are fully compatible and optimized for Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets. They provide the best reading experience on these devices.
  • Small File Size – Compared to EPUBs and PDFs, MOBI files are much smaller in size, allowing you to store more ebooks on your Kindle’s limited storage.
  • DRM Support – MOBI files can have Digital Rights Management (DRM) applied to them for copyright protection purposes. Most MOBI ebooks sold on Amazon come with DRM already enabled.
  • Text Reflow – The text in MOBI ebooks automatically reflows and adjusts based on the screen size of your Kindle device for optimal readability.
  • Enhanced Navigation – You get chapter names, bookmarks, annotations, highlights, etc when reading MOBI files on a Kindle.

Three Ways to Add MOBI Files to Your Kindle

Via USB Cable

This is the most straightforward way to manually transfer MOBI files from your computer to your Kindle. Here are the steps:

  • Connect your Kindle to your computer using a USB cable and allow USB drive mode to activate.
  • On your computer, navigate to the Kindle drive now visible. It will be labeled as the name of your Kindle device.
  • Create a folder named Books in the root directory if it doesn’t already exist.
  • Copy or move the MOBI files you want to add to your Kindle into this Books folder.
  • Eject the Kindle drive properly once the file transfer is complete.
  • On your Kindle, sync the new items. The ebooks will now appear in your library ready to read.

Via Send to Kindle Email

You can also email MOBI files to your registered Kindle email address and have them delivered wirelessly. Here is how:

  • Go to Manage Your Content and Devices on Amazon and find your Send-to-Kindle email address. It will be something like [email protected].
  • Attach the MOBI ebook files to an email and send them to your unique Kindle email address.
  • Make sure your Kindle device has an active Wi-Fi connection. Amazon will now deliver these ebook files wirelessly to your Kindle library over the internet.

Via Cloud Storage Services

Using cloud storage services like Dropbox or OneDrive is another convenient way to add new MOBI ebooks easily. Simply follow these instructions:

  • Install the cloud storage app on your Kindle device and log in to your account.
  • On your computer, upload the MOBI files into a synced folder in your cloud storage account.
  • On your Kindle, open the cloud storage app and navigate to the uploaded MOBI files.
  • Long press on each file and select the option to import it into your Kindle library.

And that’s it! The ebook will now be available to read from your library like any other book purchased from Amazon.

How to Read MOBI Files on Your Kindle

Reading MOBI ebooks on your Kindle is very straightforward. Simply follow these steps once you’ve added MOBI files to your Kindle using one of the methods described above:

  • Go to Your Library on your Kindle to see a list of all available ebooks.
  • Locate the MOBI ebook you want to read and tap to open it.
  • The ebook will open up and display properly on your Kindle. MOBI files automatically adjust to optimize text for Kindle screens.
  • Tap or swipe to turn pages in the ebook. All MOBI ebook functionality like bookmarks, notes, highlights etc. works normally.
  • To exit or close the ebook, use the Back or Home buttons as you would for any other book.

Some other reading tips:

  • Tap near the top of the screen to bring up the book navigation toolbar. This lets you quickly jump between chapters or view the table of contents.
  • Adjust text size, fonts, margins and orientation as needed for reading comfort under Settings. MOBI reflows text dynamically.
  • Bookmark interesting pages using the bookmark icon to easily return to them later.
  • Highlight memorable passages by long pressing text and choosing highlight. All are saved by Kindle automatically.
  • Use the dictionary to instantly lookup any word definitions you are unfamiliar with while reading.
