Overview
Traits are an important part of customizing and shaping your Sims’ personalities and behaviors in The Sims 4. By default, adult Sims can have up to three traits, teens have two traits, children have one trait, and toddlers have one trait.
Once you’ve finalized your Sims in Create-A-Sim (CAS), you cannot easily change their traits. However, there are a couple methods to edit your existing Sims’ traits in the game.
Using Cheats to Change Traits
The easiest way to change your Sims’ traits is by using cheats. Here’s how:
- Enable cheats – Press
Ctrl + Shift + Con PC/Mac orR1 + R2 + L1 + L2on PS4/Xbox at the same time to open the cheat console. Then typetestingcheats onand press enter. - Enter CAS cheat – Type
cas.fulleditmodeand press enter. This will allow you to fully edit your Sims in CAS. - Modify Sim in CAS – Exit out of the cheat console and shift-click on the Sim you want to modify. Select “Modify in CAS” to enter Create-A-Sim.
- Edit traits – In CAS, click on your Sim and edit their traits under the plumbob icon in the top right. Save when finished.
By using cheats, you can change your existing Sims’ traits quickly and easily. The main downside is that it feels a bit like cheating rather than earning trait changes fairly through gameplay.
Changing Traits Without Cheats
It is possible to change your Sims’ traits without cheating, though it requires more gameplay effort:
- Earn satisfaction points – Have your Sims complete Wants, Aspirations, and other goals to earn satisfaction points (SP). Teens and older need 5,000 SP.
- Buy Re-Traiting Potion – Spend those satisfaction points to purchase a Re-Traiting Potion from the Rewards Store under Aspirations.
- Drink potion – Have your Sim drink the purchased Re-Traiting Potion from their inventory.
- Change traits – After drinking the potion, you can select new traits for your Sim from the popup dialog.
It takes effort, but changing traits fairly through satisfaction points and the Re-Traiting Potion provides a sense of progression and achievement.
Other Options
There are a few other creative options players have used to change Sims’ traits:
- Mods – Trait-changing mods like MC Command Center or UI Cheats Extension can add more trait slots or options.
- Save editing – Manually editing your save file to alter Sim trait data is possible but can risk corruption.
- Start over – Deleting your Sim and remaking them in CAS erases progress but lets you completely remake them.
Tips for Changing Traits
- Back up your save before using cheats or mods to change traits, in case of glitches.
- Changing traits does not change pre-existing relationships or skills already earned.
- Teens get an additional third trait when they become Young Adults through aging up.
- Toddlers lose their single trait when aging up to Children.
Changing your Sims’ traits opens up new gameplay opportunities and helps shape your personal story. Just save frequently, and have fun exploring the effects of different trait combinations!
