How to Get and Raise Chocobo Mounts in Final Fantasy XIV

Chocobos are iconic creatures in the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV). They serve not only as mounts for faster travel but also as battle companions that can fight alongside you. This guide will cover everything you need to know about acquiring, customizing, and raising your chocobo mounts in FFXIV.

Unlocking Your First Chocobo Mount

To unlock your first chocobo mount, you must first complete the level 20 main scenario quest “A Hero in the Making” and join one of the three Grand Companies in the game – Maelstrom, Immortal Flames, or Twin Adders.

Once you have joined a Grand Company, progress through the main story quests until you reach level 20. Then, visit your Grand Company headquarters and look for the quest called “My Little Chocobo” from the following NPCs:

  • Twin Adder: Vorsaile Heuloix in New Gridania at X:9.7, Y:11.1
  • Maelstrom: R’ashaht Rhiki in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks at X:13, Y:12
  • Immortal Flames: Swift in Ul’dah – Steps of Nald at X:8.5, Y:9

Accepting this quest will reward you with 200 company seals. Purchase a “Chocobo Issuance” from your Grand Company Quartermaster for 200 seals. Finally, trade the issuance to your Grand Company’s Chocobo Porter to receive your chocobo whistle.

Equip the chocobo whistle from your Actions menu and place it on your hotbar. Using the whistle will summon your chocobo mount next to you. Congratulations, you can now ride your chocobo!

Customizing Your Chocobo’s Appearance

You can customize the appearance of your chocobo mount in several ways:

  • Change Feather Color: Complete the level 40 quest “Pegasus Print” to unlock the ability to dye your chocobo’s feathers.
  • Equip Barding: Special chocobo armor that changes your mount’s appearance. Obtained as quest rewards, crafted, or purchased from vendors.
  • Change Chocobo Stance: Alter between relaxed and combat stances. The latter has your chocobo stand more upright.

Unlocking Chocobo Companion

At level 30 in the main scenario, you can unlock a quest called “My Feisty Little Chocobo”. This allows your chocobo mount to join you in battles as a combat companion.

With your chocobo companion, you can tackle enemies and complete quests more easily. Your companion levels up alongside you, gaining EXP from monster kills.

As your chocobo companion levels up, it also earns skill points that can be allocated to specialize as a tank, healer, or DPS. This allows you to customize its role to complement your playstyle.

Raising and Improving Your Chocobo

To further improve your chocobo companion, you can send it to a chocobo stable located in the main cities. At the stable, your chocobo can train to:

  • Increase Rank: Feed Thavnairian Onions to increase rank cap from 10 to 20. Higher ranks unlock more skills.
  • Earn EXP: Train your chocobo once per hour to gain a level while stabled.
  • Improve Stats: Complete training exercises that increase stats like strength, endurance, and more.

You can also breed retired chocobos at the stable to produce offspring that inherit the parents’ attributes and stats. This allows you to create pedigree chocobo mounts with excellent performance in racing and adventuring.

Chocobo Racing

If racing is your desire, you can partake in chocobo racing at the Manderville Gold Saucer. Speak with the Race Chocobo Registrar to sign up and train a dedicated race chocobo separate from your companion.

Chocobo racing requires training your mount at the stables to improve factors like speed, stamina, acceleration, and handling. Winning races also earns MGP currency to purchase unique prizes.

Acquiring Other Mounts

While the chocobo will likely be your first mount, FFXIV offers many exotic mounts you can obtain as well:

  • Main Scenario Quest Rewards: Mounts like Magitek Armor, flying mounts, and more
  • Side Quests: Certain side quest chains grant mounts as completion rewards
  • Achievements: Finish certain achievement categories to unlock mount rewards
  • Dungeons/Trials: Defeat bosses or complete dungeon achievements to earn mounts
  • Currency: Purchase mounts using currencies like MGP, centurio seals, allied seals
  • Real Money: Optional mounts sold on the Mog Station for real currency

So get out there, unlock your chocobo mount, and explore the vast lands of Eorzea!
