The PlayStation 5 (PS5) console allows you to communicate with other players through voice chat in online multiplayer games. However, you may sometimes want to mute or disable voice chat audio. Here is a detailed guide on how to do that on your PS5.
Table of Contents
Mute Your Microphone
The easiest way to mute your microphone so other players can’t hear you is to press the mute button on your DualSense wireless controller. The mute button is located below the PS button. When muted, the light bar on your controller will turn orange. Press the button again to unmute.
Disable Voice Chat Audio Completely
If you want to completely disable voice chat audio, so you don’t hear other players and they don’t hear you, follow these steps:
- Press the PS button on your controller to access the control center
- Select the Sound card
- Toggle Mute Microphone to on to mute your mic
- Toggle Disable Game Chat Audio to on to disable voice chat
With both settings enabled, all voice chat audio will be disabled in online multiplayer games. You can toggle them back off at any time to re-enable voice chat.
Adjust Voice Chat Volume
You can also adjust the volume of voice chat audio relative to game audio:
- Press the PS button to access the control center
- Select the Sound card
- Use the Voice Chat Balance slider to adjust the mix between game audio and voice chat
Slide it left to make game audio louder and voice chat quieter. Slide it right to amplify voice chat over game audio.
Mute Specific Players
Instead of disabling all voice chat, you can mute specific players in an online multiplayer match:
- Press the PS button to access the control center
- Select the Game Base card
- Select the voice chat session you are currently in
- Select the player you want to mute
- Choose Mute/Unmute Voice to toggle their mic on or off
This will only mute that specific player so you can still hear other players.
Change Audio Output Device
You can also change your audio output device to control where you hear voice chat:
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output
- Select Output Device
- Choose either your TV speakers, headset, or HDMI audio device
For example, you could set voice chat audio to only output to your headset while game audio plays through your TV speakers.
Use Party Chat Instead
If you only want to voice chat with friends, use the PS5 party chat instead of game chat. To start a party:
- Go to the Game Base menu
- Select Parties > Create Party
- Invite friends to join
In a party, you’ll only hear the people you invite, not random online players. You can adjust party settings to mute all mics or change the audio output as well.
Muting voice chat or disabling game chat audio on your PS5 is easy once you know the steps. With these muting, output, and party chat options, you’re in complete control over your voice chat experience.
