How to Remove and Delete Product Tags in Shopify Store Admin

Product tags are a useful way to organize and categorize products in your Shopify store. As your product catalog grows, tags help group similar items together to make them easier to manage.

However, over time you may end up with outdated, irrelevant, or duplicate tags that need removing. Here’s a guide on how to delete product tags in your Shopify admin.

Viewing All Product Tags

To see a list of all existing tags:

  • Log in to your Shopify admin and go to the Products section
  • Click on Tags in the left sidebar menu

This shows every tag currently being used, along with the number of products it’s assigned to.

Removing Tags from a Single Product

To delete a tag from one product:

  • Go to the product details page for that item
  • Scroll down and locate the Tags section on the right side
  • Click the X icon next to the tag name to remove it
  • Click Save

This removes that tag only from the individual product.

Bulk Removing Tags

To quickly delete a tag from multiple products:

  • Go to Products > All products
  • Check the boxes for each product you want to remove the tag from
  • Click the Bulk edit button near the top right
  • Under Tags, click Remove tags
  • Select the tag(s) to eliminate and click Apply

This removes those tags from all the selected products in one step.

Permanently Deleting a Tag

To completely delete a tag so it no longer exists:

  • Go to Products > Tags
  • Locate the tag you want to delete and click on it
  • In the tag details, click the Delete button
  • Confirm you want to permanently delete

Note: This deletes that tag from all products it was assigned to.

Best Practices When Managing Tags

Follow these tips for keeping your tag system clean and effective:

  • Be consistent with naming tags and how you apply them
  • Use clear, descriptive names readers would understand
  • Delete unused tags to reduce clutter
  • Check for duplicate or overlapping tags to merge or eliminate
  • Review tags periodically and remove ones no longer needed

Using Tags to Organize Products

Ways you can leverage tags to better manage your inventory:

  • Group by product type
  • Separate by collection or theme
  • Indicate seasonal categories like “summer”
  • Show manufacturing material such as “cotton”
  • Identify bestselling items or new arrivals

Improving Customer Search with Tags

Tags also help customers find what they want:

  • Visitors can filter products in the storefront by tag
  • More relevant search results from tagging related products similarly
  • Reflect your product categories and how customers think about them
  • Easy way to create tag-based collections

Taking the time to thoughtfully tag your products results in an easier-to-navigate store for you and your customers. Following best practices for adding, editing and removing tags keeps your system clean as your product catalog grows.
