Instagram Stories allow users to post photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. However, there are a few ways you can view and replay expired Instagram stories, both your own and other people’s.
Table of Contents
Viewing Your Own Expired Instagram Stories
Even after your Instagram stories expire, they are still saved in your private Story Archive. Here’s how to access your archive:
- Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile picture
- Tap on the three lines menu icon in the top right corner
- Select “Archive”
- You will now see all your expired stories organized by date. Tap on any story to view it.
From your archive, you have a few options:
- Reshare the story – Tap the arrow icon to add the expired story back to your current story.
- Save the story – Tap the download icon to save the video or photo to your camera roll.
- Highlight the story – Tap the plus icon to add the story to a highlight on your profile that remains visible.
Viewing Someone Else’s Expired Instagram Stories
Unfortunately, there is no way to view someone else’s expired Instagram stories unless they were added to a highlight. Here’s how to check for story highlights:
- Go to their profile
- Under their name and bio, check if there is a row of circles labeled “Highlights”
- Tap on any highlight cover to view stories that have been preserved
If there are no highlights, then the stories have been permanently deleted after 24 hours.
Using Third-Party Apps to Save Instagram Stories
While Instagram does not allow downloading other people’s stories directly, some third-party apps claim to let you save or view expired stories. Here are some options:
- Story Saver Apps – These apps allegedly let you search for users, view their stories, and save them to your device. However, Instagram prohibits this, and the apps’ legitimacy is questionable.
- Repost Apps – Apps like Regrammer allow you to repost other people’s public Instagram stories. So if someone reposts a story you want, you could then view it.
Just be aware that these apps often violate Instagram’s terms, and privacy issues around sharing other people’s stories without consent.
Extending the Life of Your Instagram Stories
Rather than trying to recover expired stories, you can also take steps to keep your stories viewable for longer in the first place:
- Highlight key stories – As soon as you post an important story, add it to a highlight on your profile. Highlights have no time limit.
- Use longer videos – Instagram stories can be up to 60 seconds long. Use longer videos to keep content viewable for more time.
- Stagger your stories – Post individual stories over the course of the day rather than all at once. This keeps new content appearing.
Instagram Story Settings
There are also a few Instagram story settings that give you more control:
- Hide Story – Choose specific followers to hide your story from in the audience selector.
- Allow Resharing – Let people share your story as a message to extend reach.
- Save to Archive – Have your expired stories saved to the archive automatically.
Using Instagram’s built-in archive along with the right settings gives you plenty of ways to relive, reuse, and replay old Instagram stories!
