The “leave site” warning on Chrome is triggered when you try to navigate away from a page that has unsaved changes. This warning pops up asking if you really want to leave the site and that any unsaved changes will be lost.

While this can prevent accidental data loss, it can also be annoying if you get the pop-up frequently on sites you visit. Luckily, there are a few ways to disable the leave site warning in Chrome on your Windows, Linux, or Mac PC.

Why You Get the Leave Site Warning

The leave site warning is caused by JavaScript code on web pages that detects when you try to navigate away while there are unsaved changes on the form you are filling out.

Common triggers for the warning include:

  • Filling out a long web form and trying to navigate away before submitting
  • Making edits in web apps like Google Docs and closing the tab/browser
  • Web apps that autosave drafts detecting you trying to leave

The warning is meant to prevent accidental data loss. However, some sites overuse it even when no critical data is at risk.

Disable Leave Site Warnings in Chrome

Here are a few methods to disable the leave site warnings in Chrome:

Use a Browser Extension

Browser extensions that block the leave site warnings include:

  • Leave Me Alone – Stops all leave site confirmation dialogs
  • Don’t Fuck With Paste – Prevents just the warning on Google Docs
  • Navigation Confirmation Blocker – Blocks the warnings on all sites

To use these, search for the extension in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. No extra steps needed and they will start working immediately once installed.

Disable JavaScript Temporarily

You can disable JavaScript execution in Chrome to stop the leave site warnings:

  1. Click the lock icon 🔒 next to the URL bar
  2. Select JavaScript > Disable JavaScript
  3. Navigate away from sites without getting the warning

Re-enable JavaScript when done to restore normal browsing.

Open a New Incognito Window

In an Incognito window, extensions are disabled by default unless you explicitly enable them. So open an Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N) and navigate sites there to avoid extensions that might be causing the leave site warnings.

Disable or Remove Extensions Causing Warnings

Some Chrome extensions can also cause leave site warnings on pages where they normally wouldn’t appear.

To find problematic extensions:

  • Open the Extensions page
  • Disable all extensions
  • Browse sites and re-enable extensions one by one
  • If warnings reappear after enabling a specific extension, disable or remove that extension

Why You Can’t Always Disable Leave Site Warnings

The leave site warning is controlled by the website’s JavaScript code rather than the browser. So Chrome does not have a native setting to disable the warnings globally across all websites.

That’s why browser extensions that block the JavaScript code triggering the warnings are the most effective approach. They work on any site, unlike Chrome flags or settings which are limited in scope.

For site-specific issues, you can also disable JavaScript just on those sites instead of globally. Or report problematic sites misusing the leave site warning to the site owners.

So while the warnings can’t be disabled outright in Chrome without an extension, you have a few options to prevent getting bothered by unnecessary leave site confirmations while browsing.
