How to Edit and Adjust Routes in Google Maps Navigation

  1. Choose alternate routes – Google Maps shows your route in blue, but highlights alternate routes in grey. You can tap on these alternate routes to select them instead of the recommended route. This allows you to easily compare routes.
  2. Drag to customize route – You can click and drag anywhere along the blue route line to create a custom path. This will remove alternate routes and update directions based on your custom route. However, it’s easy to over-edit routes this way.
  3. Set route options – Under the “More” menu, you can set route options like avoiding highways, tolls or ferries. This allows further customization of your route.
  4. Use route preview – The route preview screen shows alternate routes side-by-side with ETAs, allowing easy comparison. You can select a new route here without exiting navigation.
  5. Search along route – You can search for stops like restaurants along your current route to add additional waypoints.
  6. Use desktop controls – On mobile browsers that allow desktop site viewing, you can access desktop controls like draggable routes.

So in summary, Google Maps provides many built-in tools to customize and adjust your navigation route to suit your preferences. Taking advantage of these features allows creating optimal routes for your trip.
